What makes a trip truly authentic?
In a world where everything is shared on social media, where distant places begin to feel strangely similar, and where every retreat or travel experience claims to be “local,” “real,” and “authentic,” it’s easy to lose sight of what that word actually means.
That’s why I’ve started shifting the focus —
From “authentic travel” to “intentional travel”
This isn’t a step-by-step guide to traveling “better.”
It’s a personal reflection on what makes a travel experience deep, transformative, and human — especially in an age where the term authentic can start to feel meaningless.
It’s not about avoiding tourist spots
You don’t need to skip the Colosseum or the Eiffel Tower to travel authentically.
🏛️ Many famous places are true masterpieces of beauty, history, and culture.
If you’re visiting a place for the first time, of course you want to see them!
❌ The question is:
Will you just check off a list and snap some photos for Instagram, or…
💭 Will you stop and truly observe?
Notice the architecture, the light, the details, the atmosphere.
Ask yourself questions. Let yourself be surprised that something built thousands of years ago is still here — quietly telling its story.
Authentic travel is about connection
Authentic travel begins when you slow down, step out of your habits, and allow the place to set the rhythm — not your schedule.
💬 Talk to someone who lives there, even just to ask for directions or share a few words.
That simple exchange often reveals more about a place than any guidebook.
Be a responsible guest
🛫 Travel today isn’t exactly sustainable — especially air travel.
But let’s be honest: it’s hard to give up the dream of seeing the world with your own eyes.
So what can we do to minimize our impact?
✨ Choose more sustainable modes of transport when possible
✨ Buy from local businesses, artisans, and small producers
✨ Leave the world better than you found it
💡 That was the rule in the campground I visited as a child:
Even if you didn’t make the mess, you pick up the paper someone else left behind.
A simple gesture — but one that matters.
Reflection questions for your next journey
Write these in your phone notes. Use them while traveling. They can shift your whole experience.
- What’s the dominant sound here? What might have been heard here 100 years ago?
- What’s the smallest or most hidden detail I can notice right now?
- How do people move? What’s their rhythm? Do they speak quietly or loudly?
- Did I have a genuine exchange with someone local today?
- What small thing can I do to leave this place better than I found it?

I’m Valeria — certified Italian language teacher and founder of Vita Semplice in Italia. I help people learn Italian not just through grammar and vocabulary, but through real-life connection and cultural immersion. I design and lead experiential language journeys in rural Italy, where learning happens in piazzas, kitchens, and conversations with locals. I believe language is a gateway to belonging — and that feeling at home in a new culture starts with slowing down and truly being present.
